PhD Program

Kobe University has one of the most respected graduate schools of business administration in Japan. In their first 2 years at the graduate school, with the goal of developing the core research skills necessary for the final three years of the program, each student, under the supervision of their advisor, selects coursework from nine core courses and three research methodology courses. Over the following 3 years, students concentrate on writing a Ph.D. thesis, in close discussion with the members of their Ph.D. dissertation committee.

As of April 2015, Kobe University offers Global Master’s Programs (GMAPs) in the fields of Business Administration, Economics and Law. In GMAPs, all coursework and research supervision are conducted in English. Global field research/practicum is incorporated into the curriculum to bridge research with practice in a global context. For instance, the GMAP in management is the SESAMI (Strategic Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Alliance Management Initiatives) Program, which emphasizes entrepreneurship and sustainability along with strategic and marketing management. The SESAMI Program offers the Ph.D. as well as the Master’s degree.

MBA Program

In 1989, the School established the program for practicing managers and professionals, bearing upon the needs of the industrial community. It was the first such school in Japan among government-owned universities. Prior to its establishment, we organized a series of meetings comprised of Human Resource Managers in diverse companies, together with our selected faculty members, to come up with a brand new concept of building a business school of our own. We are keenly aware that MBA students from the real business world tend to have diverse work experiences and even a different awareness. To meet their needs, we provide Research-based Education, and a curriculum grounded in firm academic discipline. Students are required to bring the problems faced in their work life into the classrooms. On-the-job learning is done there.

We wove our conception of the Kobe-Style business school into the "Project System" of our MBA program. In the project system, students who share the same interests covering various aspects of business subjects form a group and find a resolution to a problem through joint study. Core faculty members assume the role of both offering coursework and facilitating the process of group efforts. As the name of the program, e.g., Management Theory in Practice (MTP), as well as the founding mission of Kobe University, e.g., "the fusion of academic insight and reality in practice," clearly denote, it is our deeply seated belief that linking theory and practice is most crucial in our program.
